Ecolabels

Over the last few years, the European Union has established or revised criteria for a number of product Ecolabels which potentially concern flame retardants. Under these criteria, which aim to ensure that chemicals used are compatible with environmental protection and consumer health concerns, many flame retardants can be appropriately used, and that they are treated like any other chemicals in assessing their suitability.

A number of Member States have emphasised during these discussions that flame retardants in certain products (textiles, furniture, electric and electronic goods… ) are important for consumer safety “Flame retardants should not be forbidden, especially when there is a national regulation on safety and security for users and consumers”.
