Fire is a very significant cause of death, injury, suffering, and of property damage. In 2001, recorded fires caused some 2 905 deaths in total in the 6 largest EU countries and directly cost society 0.1 – 0.28% of annual GDP (Gross Domestic Product). In the USA (2003), over 1.5 million fires were attended by public fire services, causing 3 925 civilian deaths and 18 125 civilian injuries.
The total, direct and indirect cost of all fires, including economic consequences of deaths and injuries, is estimated to be around 1% of GDP.
